CHLORINE IN DRINKING WATER — A key element of the District’s Multi-Barrier Approach to Ensuring Safe Drinking Water is the use of sodium hypochlorite (chlorine) as a disinfectant. Residents concerned about chlorine and chlorine by-products  in their water should consider use NSF certified activated carbon  filtration.

The levels of sodium exiting the treatment plants are within established limits, but can exceed the alert level for people on sodium restricted diets. It is recommended that such people use an alternative source for drinking water.
